Arizona Fall League 2021: Ji-Hwan Bae Has Big Day in Debut

Day two fo the Arizona Fall League continued on Thursday, with the Peoria Javelinas taking on the Glendale Desert Dogs. The Javelinas, of course, are home to the seven prospects for the Pittsburgh Pirates participating in the AFL.

Yesterday Nick Gonzales and Canaan Smith-Njigba played, and both collected hits. Thursday neither started but Ji-Hwan Bae started at second base and had himself quite the game.

Bae, 22, went 1 for 2 on the day but he made it count, hitting a two-run home run in the eighth inning off of J.B. Olson. The South Korean born Bae also scored four runs on the night, thank in large part to his three walks that he was able to draw.

Smith-Njigba pinch-hit late in the game and struck out.

Peoria continues their season on Friday with a late night contest against the Salt River Rafters that starts at 9:35 PM EST.

For Bae, he is coming off a season that saw him hit for a batting slash of .281/.360/.422. He showed power that he hadn't before, hitting eight home runs, while stealing 20 bases on the season. He even expanded his versatility during the season, seeing some playing time in center field on top of second base.

None of the four pitchers for the Pirates have played yet in the games played.
