Arizona Fall League Update: Canaan Smith-Njigba Reaches Base Four Times In Peoria Win

A little bit of a late update, still not feeling 100%, but it was a busy night for the Pittsburgh Pirates' prospects in the Arizona Fall League so still wanted to talk about it a little bit.

The Peoria Javelinas won a high scoring contest Friday night, defeating the Scottsdale Scorpion 10-8. Carmen Mlodzinski became the second of the four Pirates' pitching prospects to earn a win in the AFL, after pitching 2 1/3 innings in relief, and following Michael Burrows victory earlier in the week.

Mlodzinski allowed a home run among his two hits surrendered, accounting for the lone run on his ledger. He also recorded a strikeout while throwing 23 of his 32 pitches for strikes. It was his second appearance of the AFL, the other being earlier in the week where all four pitchers played.

Bear Bellomy was the other pitcher to play on Friday, throwing the ninth inning to close things out. He allowed two runs on two hits, while also walking two and recording a lone strike out. He was less efficient as Mlodzinski, as only 10 of Bellomy's 23 pitches went for strikes.

On the offensive side of things, both Ji-Hwan Bae and Canaan Smith-Njigba recorded multiple hits in the winning effort.

For Smith-Njigba, he continues to show an advanced approach at the plate during the AFL, the kind that could eventually land him in the majors at some point in 2022. He drew two more walks on the night, which allowed him to reach base four times total.

He rebounds after striking out three times at the plate the other night, and now has eight overall walks on the AFL season.

Bae led off yet again for the Javelinas, playing second base this time around. He scored a run on his two hits while striking out once. The South Korean born Bae has also showed a great approach to the plate, as going into the game he had walked more than he struck out (now even).

Peoria will continue their AFL schedule with a late Saturday start (9:35 PM ET) before getting Sunday off.
